Don't let corporations ignore their shareholders

An important tool to keep corporations accountable is under attack right now. The US Securities and Exchange Commission has proposed new rules that would restrict the right of shareholders to petition corporations at their annual meetings, thereby shutting down public discussion around controversial issues. Oxfam has used this technique to put pressure on companies like Proctor & Gamble and the Newmont Mining Corporation to improve their human rights practices.
